Baguio City is famous for its breezy weather, verdant pine trees, and numerous attractions. One unmissable place to learn more about the heritage and culture of the Cordilleras is the Easter Weaving Room. Located along Easter Road in the Summer Capital, the Easter Weaving Room was founded in 1909, which makes it as old as the City of Pines.

Under the helm of Deaconess Anne Hargreaves, the Easter School was opened to women with the aim of having them learn weaving as a useful and profitable skill. The Easter Weaving Room is one of the most important parts of one of Baguio’s oldest educational institutions, Easter College. Though the room and its equipment were destroyed in World War II, it was re-established in 1948 by women who’d previously learned and worked there.

Today, Easter College and Easter Weaving Room are still standing, with the room and its looms now housed separately from the campus. Upon entering the work area, you’ll be amazed at the weavers practicing their craft, as well as the incredible range of handwoven goods they produce, such as decorative wall hangings, Christmas decor, and colorful Montanosa cloth. Apart from seeing the traditional way of weaving such handicrafts, you can even talk to some of the weavers to learn more about their experiences.

Though Baguio City has many woven items in its markets as well as Mines View Park, the accessories, linens, and clothes at the Easter Weaving Room are deemed by locals and tourists alike as far superior in quality. Apart from the strength and quality of the weaving, in many cases the goods there are even cheaper.

If you’re planning a trip to the Summer Capital, consider adding this important historical spot to your itinerary. It’s the perfect spot to learn more about the efforts to keep this dying art alive and continue to weave beautiful Cordilleran creations.
