Originally known as Overseas Contract Worker (OCW), the term Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) refers to Filipinos who temporarily live and work abroad. A bona-fide OFW must be registered by the Philippine authrities led by Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA). A registration fee of USD25 will be collected by the agency and is valid for two years.

There are basically two types of OFW, land-based and sea-based or seafarers. Immediate family members traveling and living with an OFW who are often on family visas are also considered OFW.
